WordPress Android App 1.1.3

April 6th, 2010 Posted 8:02 pm

If you own an Android phone (or iPhone or Blackberry) and also post articles on a WordPress based website then the new WordPress App is for you! Some time ago I believe I mentioned that I had discovered this app but i never really got in depth other then to say that I loved it. For those of you who cant simply take my word for it, I decided I should probably give it the proper review that it deserves. Now is a great time to do so because a new even more awesome version was just released yesterday! I’ll first just go over some of its features.

- Supports Multiple accounts and/or Multiple Websites
Pretty self explanatory but basically you save your login info for whatever accounts you have and you can pick which one to manage. On mine, I have one set up for my administrator account for TheJawatech.com and I have another set up for my editor account on 979Represent.com When I open the app it asks me which one I want to use.

- Add and Manage New Posts
Once you choose which account you wish to use, You have the option to manage your posts. Just click on the posts tab and you’ll see a list of all your posts. You’ll even see the unpublished ones. From here you can create a new post or open up one thats already started and edit away. Everything is like you imagine it should be. You’ve got your bold, Italic, URL, and block quote buttons to help with formatting. You can add pictures from your phone to your posts here and even choose what category and tags your post should be linked to. Another great thing is you can choose whether to publish it or not. Once you are done you tap save and it saves the file to your local drafts on your phone. If you want to put it on your server but dont want to publish it yet you could also just click Upload Now. If you want it uploaded to the server AND published right away you can also check the publish box and then click upload now. Whatever floats your boat. If you change your mind later you can change all of this from the list of posts by simply clicking on the post and going back to edit.

- Add and Manage New Pages
This works exactly the same way as managing posts. See above for details.
- Manage Comments
You can manage global comments and you can manage comments for each post and or page.  Read comments and approve and or reply to them right then and there. You can completely delete comments if you want and you can also mark them as spam right from your phone. How cool is that?!

- Upload Pictures and Video directly from phone into a New Post
This is the newest feature that was just added in version 1.1.3 and its a really good one. Say you just took a video or picture of something really cool and you want to show everyone. Well from the picture preview you choose share, and just like you would post on twitter or facebook, You can post as a new article on your website. When you choose WordPress from the share list it brings up a box and asks you which blog account you want to use and BAM! your at the new post editor screen! Picture already attached. All you gotta do is give it a title and add some content if you want and your ready to upload to the web server! It’s Super Handy if your a picture freak like myself. I see all kinds of things that need lots of explaining. Sometimes you just see something that requires a caption way more then 115 characters. Sometimes you need to write a story about it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well now you have room to write an odyssey of a description if you choose to do so. It can be hectic typing so much text on a tiny phone but if you’ve got nothing else to do and your away from a computer its a great productive way to spend your time. Another important note is that this feature also works with URL’s, Youtube, Google Places Directory,  and many other apps. If it’s got a share button, WordPress will be on that share list!

Also It’s totally free! At least it’s free on the Android Market. I’m not sure if the iPhone market charge you extra or not so you’ll just have to go check it out and see. It’s Probably free.. anyway Go check it out! Have fun!

Scan this barcode to Download the latest version of WordPress Android App!

Or if your actually on your phone just follow the link by tapping on it.

Mighty Tablets Rock! (computers, not Moses)

[  Originally written for 979Represent.com  ]

Tablet computers have been around for a long time now, but it seems that everyone has suddenly become aware of their majesty with the release of the iPad. Tablets in general are great for someone who needs to use a computer while standing up or for someone who likes to draw alot or take notes. The HP TouchSmart is a great example of an exceptional Tablet PC. You have the full touch screen when its folded flat and if you get tired of that it folds around like a regular laptop with actual keys and buttons. Also because its not a mac you can actually play games on it. (Have YOU ever tried playing Chrono Trigger on a touch screen?)

The iPad is a giant cell phone that doesn’t fit in your pocket. Period. It’s main purpose is to browse the internet and look pretty. Because of the OS that it uses, it can only run one program at a time.. Sorry not program, I meant app. .from their fancy pants app store. It does look really pretty i’ll give it that. It also looks super thin; I bet if I saw one in person, I could break it over my knee with the first or second try. Oh you have an iPad you say? May I hold it?

I am sure there will soon be a way to hack the iPad to make them usefull somehow, but for now I just see it as a way to show your friends how much of a douchebag you are. I’m not buying into the hype and if your in the market for a actual computer I strongly recomend doing your research.

(P.S. Research involves more then watching youtube videos and reading Ashton Kutcher’s twitter feed)

Speaking of Research, Google is currently in the process of creating their own “iPad killer” Tablet PC. Some images were released of a mockup prototype which appeared to be running the beautifull Google Chrome OS. These mockups appear to have been put together by Glen Murphy, Google Chrome’s designer therefore it is resonable to beleve that this design will be fairly accurate. It will be interesting to watch Google crush the mac empire. (At least thats how I envision it every time I close my eyes..)

I love Google.

As far as the Tablets go, I am still favoring the ACTUAL Tablet PC’s that are already out there. I don’t know about you but I like my computers to be usefull and have the ability to multitask. I Like to play video games, and for now I enjoy the freedoms associated with the Windows systems.

TOP 6 REASONS WHY YOUR COMPUTER SUCKS

I have compiled the top 6 most common reasons why most people’s computers suck. This list is just the tip of the iceberg as there could be a variety (and often) a combination of reasons why your computer sucks. Read on friends, and soak my wisdom in like a sponge.

6. Internet Explorer.

It’s slow, it does not support modern website code, It is unstable, pop ups, Spam, and ridiculous toolbars. I could talk for days about the reasons why Internet Explorer is a terrible browser. Ever see a website that looks like crap? If your using IE im sure you see it quite often. As a web designer i have a hard time dealing with IE’s in ability to properly display standard code. If you make a website to work with any other browser, it looks like crap in IE. It’s designed that way. Microsoft hates you. Do yourself a favor and install Google Chrome. Don’t import anything just delete the old links to IE so you never accidently open it again and be done with it.

5. The Crappy Email Scenario.

Verizon, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, Suddenlink, ect. If your email address does not end with @gmail.com then you are doing it wrong. If you are using Microsoft Outlook and your not at work your doing it wrong. If your work uses it then your work’s IT department is Lazy and THEY are doing it wrong. Probably best if you just don’t say anything and brood silently to yourself.

4. You secretly have 30 usless programs running in the backround that you don’t even know about!

Internet “optimizers”, Dummy “helper” programs, and often spyware can be running your computer into the ground on a daily basis. Many programs are set by default to run on windows startup and unless you absolutly always use them it is unnecessary. If you are running Windows XP hold down the windows key +’R’ and the run program prompt will come up. Now type “msconfig” and hit enter. If you are running Windows 7 just type it in the program search. If you are running Vista then you should install Windows 7. Now that you have msconfig running you will see the system configuration screen. click on the startup tab and you can choose which programs you want to run on startup. Uncheck the ones that you dont need, hit apply, and restart your computer. Hurray its faster!

[ note: If msconfig fails to run you have big problems. Prepare to reinstall Windows. Now this time remember your newfound knowledge of computers and don't break everything. ]

3. You use Kazaa, Limewire, ect. and you try and pirate movies and games.

Everyone knows that uTorrent is the way to go. If your gonna be a pirate at least do it right. When downloading questionable content make sure you read the comments from previous people that have downloaded it. If it’s bogus they will be saying something about it.

2. You Have a overpriced security program installed that restricts your every move.

Norton, Macafee, and others can do a fine job of protecting your computer. They can also do a fine job at draining your wallet and making your computer just about useless. Clamwin is a free virus scan program that you can download and it works great. Look into it. If you think you might have downloaded something questionable its a good idea to run Spybot Seek & Destroy. It doesn’t need to be running all the time like Clamwin. Think of it this way: If Clamwin is the Police then Spybot Seek & Destroy is SWAT. It’s a free download as well.

1. …

And the Number one way to know that your computer sucks? If it’s a Mac. They are disposable. Grow up and buy yourself a mans computer. OH NO My mac is outdated, can I upgrade my processor? No. Can I upgrade my…no. throw that thing in the fucking garbage. PC’s can do everything a mac can do and MUCH more. Hey Mac users have you gotten past the juggernauts in the Delta missions on Call of Duty? Oh thats right you cant play games. LOL Those Poor hipsters. If you hate Microsoft so much then install Linux on your computer. It’s free , it’s awesome, it’s upgradeable, and at least then you wont look like a Pompous Douchebag.

Send a message to yourself

A while back I stumbled across a website that allows you to send your future self an email.
http://www.futureme.org
The way it works is you type yourself a message and it will be stored for a number of years before it is delivered. Kind of like a time capsule. I decided to try it out and I decided to set the timer for 40 years from now. after sitting there for a few minuets trying to come up with something to tell my future self i realized that unless i somehow lose my memory i will undoubtedly already know everything i currently know… plus lots more. So i settled on describing my current life and asking myself stupid questions. I’m sure it will make me laugh when I’m 63 checking my email with my implanted Google internet brain computer.

So this got me thinking about the dangers of time travel again. Time travel? Dangerous you say? Hell yeah it would be dangerous. And im not talking about dangerously awesome like “Back To The Future”. All kinds of horrible things could happen. Too many to list here, at least not tonight. I don’t think we really need to worry about it yet.

But all dangers aside. It would be totally awesome to be able to send a message to yourself in the past. What would you tell yourself? Warnings of terrible things to come? Like a personal Nostradamus?

“Don’t hold that gas can so close to the fire”
“Tell her you love her”
“Buy stock in Microsoft and Google”
“Shoot this person with ice bullets and save mom from the owls at the circus”

Well you gotta have at least one wrong one right? Otherwise the Christians will think your a witch and burn you to death.

I am curious, Leave me a comment.

What would you tell your past you in an email?

Digsby: The Answer to Problems You Didn’t Even Know You Had

June 28th, 2009 Posted 3:07 pm

Do you Use Facebook? Myspace? Twitter? Do you Check your Email? Chat with people on AIM and Yahoo chat? I guess the real question is Who Doesn’t? If you are like me then you probably get tired of going back and forth with everything. You Need Digsby. Digsby is a chat program that can talk to everyone no matter what they are using. Is works much in the same manner as Trillian however Digsby can do much more. I have been a avid user of Trillion since its release and i Had a hard time believing anything could beat its functionality. I finally broke down and tried Digsby and I will never look back. It is hands down the best chat client I have ever used.
All chat clients are supported: AIM, YAHOO IM, MSN, ICQ, IRC, Jabber, Google Talk, and even the Facebook chat. Email notification is supported as well as social network notifications such as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and even LinkedIn. The notification feature is probably what impressed me the most. You can decide what you do and don’t want to be notified about and you can even choose what corner of the monitor you want them to pop up in. Dual Monitors are also supported so if you have 2 screens like i do you can have them pop up on the other screen out of the way. Very impressive. If you are watching a movie full screen Digsby can notify you of your friends updates without interrupting the movie. Also the color themes of Digsby are fully customizable. There are a lot more appearance options then I had expected. All in all i would say that Digsby wins hands down. Also It’s free and you can download it HERE
