This is the first Quakecon to occur since ID was acquired by Zenimax. There have been some drastic changes this year and I am left with a lot of mixed emotions.

The new registration process was phenomenal. The overall setup and hard work everyone put into everything was very impressive…

That being said, it just didn’t feel the same at all. This year someone decided that it would be a good idea to ban file sharing in the BYOC. BAN FILE SHARING?! Quakecon is supposed to be Americas largest and most awesome LAN party. Tell me, What kind of shitty ass LAN party BANS FILE SHARING?! This year, there was nothing that I could do in the BYOC, that I couldn’t have done better and faster at home. With Steam not working at all and Quake Live running hit or miss there is really not much to do in the BYOC. I thought it was especially ironic when they announced a special Quakecon 2010 Gaming package. During Quakecon only, you can buy every game ID and Bethesda has ever made for only $70! Heres the catch, Its through STEAM! You cant even log into Steam when your at Quakecon!!! LOL ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! They literally said you should probably leave so you could go buy it. What a Cluster Fuck. You would think that at least Quake Live would work well at Quakecon right? Wrong. It ran great when it worked but the connection was so hit or miss it made you not even want to play it.

Back in olden times, we used to hang out in the BYOC all night! We would drink outrageous amounts of BAWLS energy drinks and browse other users computers and see what kind of weird shit they had to offer. EVERYONES games worked because with file sharing, everyone had the same games. DC++ was the LIFE FORCE behind the BYOC. Now that it’s gone you might as well just get a general admission pass and just look around for a few hours and then leave. File Sharing is no more illegal than is sharing a piece of birthday cake. Any website you have ever viewed is proof of this. If you are trying to stop software piracy…well then your going to have to kill the internet all together (good luck with that).

There was no Bawls booth this year and the only answer I could get out of anyone is that they went bankrupt. I remember last year they had an entire booth made up of cases of Bawls. They couldn’t truck that shit in fast enough. I saw a few people this year that must have brought their own and i know they still sell that shit at the store! So whats the deal with that? Whatever the reason for them not being there, it just added to the failure.

Needless to say we checked out of the hotel early and came home yesterday out of sheer boredom and frustration. Something that I have never EVER done. I’m really glad I got to check out RAGE, BRINK, and Fallout 4. John Carmack’s keynote speech was incredibly insightful. It made coming to Quakecon all worth it. I do not regret making the trip, but I do regret bringing my computer.

I am just thankful that I was not one of the many people that drove from across the whole damn country to come to Quakecon this year. If there had been a “NO FILE SHARING” announcement months ago, I am willing to bet that most of us wouldn’t have bothered to participate in the BYOC at all.

For those of you who have never been, Heres a video of me doing a quick walk through:

Apple has been a huge force in mobile technology over the past few years. Their Sales have skyrocketed with every new version of the iPhone and everyone seems to just love everything that they do. So much so that no one seems to notice when they rob their customers blind. I don’t feel like listing everything that they have done but a quick Google search should fill you in. Most recently, the public eye has been opened to a few more of Apples negligent business practices which have in fact been happening all along. CNET.COM recently did an article about the new iPhone 4′s notorious reception problem. In this article they described their phone conversation with an Apple Care Representative regarding the new software fix. During their call, the Apple Care rep said the update “would address only how bars are displayed in the signal meter on the handset’s screen. As he put it, it would fix a problem where more bars are mistakenly shown when users are in areas with poor AT&T reception.”

Let me just clarify what this means. There are actually TWO separate issues at hand here. First of all the new Antenna. the design utilizes dual antennas which are built into the body of the phone. When you hold the phone with your left hand, your skin shorts out the antennae and you lose your reception. Steve Jobs responded to this issue by basically saying “There’s nothing wrong with my phone, It’s your fault for holding it wrong. If you have to hold it with your left hand then buy our $30 rubber cover to prevent the shorting.”

If thats not bad enough there is an even more serious issue at hand. While studying the antenna signal short issue, it was recently discovered that Apple has been programing ALL iPhones to display false readings on their signal bars. 2 Bars to be exact. So when you think you have 4 bars you actually only have about 2. They did this on purpose to make the iPhone and the AT&T Network appear to be superior and obviously it worked. When confronted with this issue Apple basically said “Ooops. We’ll get right on fixing that.”

So now Apple has responded to the antenna short issue by saying that they will be releasing a software update which will fix the signal loss problem. Turns out that their Software “FIX” is to have the phone LIE AGAIN about its signal strength. Thats right they are going to make the phone pretend like shorting out its antennas has no effect on its reception. you will be aboe to short your antennae all day long and you’ll still have 4 BARS! Hurray! Now thats how you fix problems! Just cover them up with nice lies and pretend they don’t exist. Apple has no intention of owning up to their hardware design failures whatsoever. Are they just the greatest or what! How Stupid do they think we are?

On a lighter note it does make for some really funny Videos!

I hate when people say one thing and then do another. It’s not acceptable and if you are a business owner you know that that shit does not fly. So why is it ok for giant software companies to do it? Here’s the deal, I don’t like when my computer does things that I didnt tell it to do. I can’t stand programs that try and secretly connect to their mother ship to report my whereabouts and habits. Call me paranoid. What software company would do such a thing you may ask? Well Adobe for starters. When you launch a CS3 or later Adobe application , your computer secretly connects to what looks like an local IP address 192.168.112.2O7.net

Wait something is wrong here. If you take a close look at this address, the last “numbers” of the IP address (2O7) look funny. Thats because it’s not a zero its actually the letter ‘O’. Also, IP address don’t end in any .com/net/org suffix. This is a website pretending to be something it’s not.

Turns out that 192.168.112.2O7.net is owned by Omniture, a huge behavioral analytics firm. They want to know what you do in your spare time. Basically, They are spying on us. Sugar coat it any way you like but thats the bottom line and there isn’t a damn thing you can do about it… Or is there?

Don’t worry friend. I Will Teach You.

We are going to use Windows firewall to block those fuckers and make sure they never see a damn thing from your computer ever again. I’m using Windows 7 so if your using something else then this instructions are usless to you and you should just skip to the end or just go away and read another article. Go on. Clear out!

Ok so the first thing your going to do is push the windows key on your keyboard to bring up the start menu. Or if your one of those mouth breather types go ahead and use your mouse clicker device because it lights up when you move it. Oooh Shiney!

In the search bar type “%windir%\system32\WF.msc” and hit enter. Or copy and paste it like a smart kid. If you do it fast enough your friends will think your SUPER smart!
Welcome to the Windows Firewall Control Panel. On the left select “Outbound Rules” and then on the right select “New Rule”. Now your going to want to Select “Custom Rule” and then “All Programs”. Now it is going to show you a screen where it asks you Which ports and protocols this new rule will apply to. Go ahead and leave this alone and click next because we want this protection to apply everywhere at all times just in case. Now is the fun part. We are going to enter the IP address of the website we want to block. It is a Remote IP address on the lower set of boxes click “These IP addresses”, click “Add” and type your address. To block the Omniture fuckers we’re going to use the address “66.235.132.91″ without the quotes.
If you have a list of fuckers to block you can add all the addresses now and click next. Now your going to select the Block option because we obvoiuslly want to block this, otherwise we wouldnt be here in the first place! Click next a few more times, Give your new rule a funny name like “BLOCK ADOBE SPY FUCKERS” click next again and your all set! I also like to make rules like this for shitty websites that I hate like Yahoo.com That way if I let a friend use my computer I dont have to worry about them going to something retarded.
Here’s what mine looks like:

If you are not using Windows 7, then at least I was able to inform you about Software Companies and their mass quantities of Douchbaggery. Add that one to your spell check dictionary!

On a side note, after writing this article I feel that I have really singled out Adobe as a wicked villain and thats not at all what I am trying to do. I love Adobe even if they are some sneaky little bastards. They make great products and in reality they probibly only use the data to see which Adobe products get the most use and it’s all perfectly legal in fine print. Their methods are just a little too invasive for my taste. Adobe is not the only company that does this sort of thing. Omniture works with hundreds of big name software firms some of which are probibly installed on your computer right now. Don’t even get me started on Apple’s shitty business operation. I could produce a whole blog on the horrible shit that they do. Anyway, Cheers. Have Fun!

NEDM. Not even doom music will make the Mac competitive in the gaming world. Now that Steam is available to Mac users, everyone feels like they are actually going to be part of the game. Can you even right click? How many cores? Air cooled? Are you fucking kidding me? Remember back in the day when they let the dreamcast players share the PC servers on Quake 3 Arena? It was a fucking massacre! I don’t like Macs for a lot of reasons. But I’m down for killing the shit out of them in Bad Company 2. Yes I am being an asshole but its funny. Is Steve Jobs going to tell you what games you can and cant play? Is he going to charge you extra every time you save or just every time you die? He is in control of his hardware and don’t you forget it. You just pay him to let you use it. Now gravel before him, GRAVEL!

If you own an Android phone (or iPhone or Blackberry) and also post articles on a WordPress based website then the new WordPress App is for you! Some time ago I believe I mentioned that I had discovered this app but i never really got in depth other then to say that I loved it. For those of you who cant simply take my word for it, I decided I should probably give it the proper review that it deserves. Now is a great time to do so because a new even more awesome version was just released yesterday! I’ll first just go over some of its features.

- Supports Multiple accounts and/or Multiple Websites

Pretty self explanatory but basically you save your login info for whatever accounts you have and you can pick which one to manage. On mine, I have one set up for my administrator account for TheJawatech.com and I have another set up for my editor account on 979Represent.com When I open the app it asks me which one I want to use.

- Add and Manage New Posts

Once you choose which account you wish to use, You have the option to manage your posts. Just click on the posts tab and you’ll see a list of all your posts. You’ll even see the unpublished ones. From here you can create a new post or open up one thats already started and edit away. Everything is like you imagine it should be. You’ve got your bold, Italic, URL, and block quote buttons to help with formatting. You can add pictures from your phone to your posts here and even choose what category and tags your post should be linked to. Another great thing is you can choose whether to publish it or not. Once you are done you tap save and it saves the file to your local drafts on your phone. If you want to put it on your server but dont want to publish it yet you could also just click Upload Now. If you want it uploaded to the server AND published right away you can also check the publish box and then click upload now. Whatever floats your boat. If you change your mind later you can change all of this from the list of posts by simply clicking on the post and going back to edit.

- Add and Manage New Pages

This works exactly the same way as managing posts. See above for details.

- Manage Comments

You can manage global comments and you can manage comments for each post and or page. Read comments and approve and or reply to them right then and there. You can completely delete comments if you want and you can also mark them as spam right from your phone. How cool is that?!

- Upload Pictures and Video directly from phone into a New Post

This is the newest feature that was just added in version 1.1.3 and its a really good one. Say you just took a video or picture of something really cool and you want to show everyone. Well from the picture preview you choose share, and just like you would post on twitter or facebook, You can post as a new article on your website. When you choose WordPress from the share list it brings up a box and asks you which blog account you want to use and BAM! your at the new post editor screen! Picture already attached. All you gotta do is give it a title and add some content if you want and your ready to upload to the web server! It’s Super Handy if your a picture freak like myself. I see all kinds of things that need lots of explaining. Sometimes you just see something that requires a caption way more then 115 characters. Sometimes you need to write a story about it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well now you have room to write an odyssey of a description if you choose to do so. It can be hectic typing so much text on a tiny phone but if you’ve got nothing else to do and your away from a computer its a great productive way to spend your time. Another important note is that this feature also works with URL’s, Youtube, Google Places Directory, and many other apps. If it’s got a share button, WordPress will be on that share list!

Also It’s totally free! At least it’s free on the Android Market. I’m not sure if the iPhone market charge you extra or not so you’ll just have to go check it out and see. It’s Probably free.. anyway Go check it out! Have fun!

Is your computer slowing down more and more? Does it completely shut down for no reason? Dust. A computers worst enemy. Often misdiagnosed as a virus, these symptoms are caused by overheating. Most computers are air cooled. Youve got big heat sinks and fans that work hard to keep your computer cool. Computers absolutly HATE heat. The colder they are the better. All that air pushing through collects dust on everything. The more dust that clogs up your cooling system the hotter your computer will get. The hotter it gets, the slower it gets and if it gets too hot you start to damage components. If your computer just turns off suddenly all by its self, it may be because it is overheating. When was the last time you took YOUR computer apart to clean your heat sinks? Most people are surprised to learn that dust maintenance is needed quite often. I clean my computer at least every month. If you smoke inside your computer will get dusty even faster. Never cleaned it?! Ever?! Well better get to it! If you need help or have questions let me know, I’m here to help! Shoot me an email at Frankbeans86@gmail.com

Fall back and spring foward. Why do we do this? Ask anyone you know and most people will give you all kinds of half-assed answers. “Farmers need more time for crops. Because of the earths wobble. To make the day longer. Because that’s just how it is” ect. Most people really don’t have a clue. I understand that throughout the year, the durration of day time vs night time varies. What I don’t understand is why we change our clocks. Your not making the day longer or shorter. You are changing a damn clock. From what I gather it seems that the main reason is to keep people’s schedual synchronized with the earths daylight cycles making sunset occur at the same time year round. That just seems pointless to me. First of all It’s constantly a variable. The earth doesn’t just click over into winter mode one day. Its a gradual process. Why can’t we just leave it alone? Quit screwin’ around and pick one. Set it and forget it. Who gives a shit if its dark sometimes at 6pm and sometimes at 7pm. If your schedule is affected by the changing seasons then adjust your damn schedule. Why make everyone else’s life more complicated?

Fun fact: Arizona doesn’t fuck around with daylight savings time and neither does most of the rest of the world. Why? BECAUSE IT’S FUCKING STUPID!
